FAQ
Questions, answered.
Can't find yours? Ask us and we'll add it.
Do my users need an account?+
No. They open the chat and write. If they're already signed in to your site, octokan recognises them automatically.
What does installing involve?+
One script tag before </body>, or one component in your Next.js layout. The dashboard shows a live badge the moment your site loads it.
What happens if I'm away?+
Messages queue safely, and you get a Telegram or email alert so you can answer from wherever you are.
Which platforms does it work on?+
Any website (one script tag), Next.js, Ionic and Capacitor, iOS (Swift package), Android (Kotlin library), React Native and Expo (works in Expo Go) and Flutter. All of them feed the same inbox.
Can I restrict where the chat loads?+
Yes. List your domains under Allowed sites and every other origin is refused.
Who owns the data?+
You do. Export it all or delete it any time, set automatic retention, and your users can delete their own chat.
What counts as a conversation?+
One visitor's thread in a month, however many messages it takes.
How does octokan know who is writing?+
If the visitor is signed in to your site, octokan reads their id, email and name from your existing sign-in (never tokens). They see who they're signed in as, with a "Not you?" link, and you can switch it off in Settings.
Is the backend URL a secret?+
No. Your app key and the backend address are public by design: the chat script and the mobile SDKs have to call them, like any API. What protects you is that the backend never trusts the caller: every visitor gets a random token (only its hash is stored), requests are rate-limited, browser origins can be restricted to your own sites, and the secrets (database service key, identity secret, AI key) live only on the server and never reach a browser or an app.
Does octokan use cookies or analytics?+
No cookies and no analytics. Nothing is stored about a person until they open the chat, and IP addresses are never saved.
Can people send photos, files or voice notes?+
Yes, on the web chat: visitors and you can attach photos, PDFs and other documents up to 10 MB, and record voice notes. In the mobile SDKs, support's photos, files and voice notes appear in the chat today, and sending a photo from React Native works (the setup command installs expo-image-picker). Sending from Flutter, Android and iOS is next.
Does the chat icon show unread replies?+
Yes. The chat button shows a red number when support has replied, even while the chat is closed. If you use your own icon, a hook (React Native), notifier (Flutter), flow (Android) or observable object (iOS) gives you the same number.
Can I give visitors nicknames?+
Yes. In the inbox, click a visitor's name to add a nickname and pick an icon. Only you see them, and they also appear in your Telegram and email alerts.
Are my users' messages encrypted?+
Yes, both ways. In transit, everything travels over TLS between the user's device, octokan and your inbox. At rest, each message is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before it is written to the database, with a separate key per app. The keys live only in server settings, never in the database, so a copy of the database reads as ciphertext. The text is decrypted for the user in their own chat and for you and your team in the inbox. To deliver messages, send alerts and run AI Reply, octokan's servers decrypt them briefly; this is not zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption.
Is there a free plan?+
No. Every account gets a 7-day free trial of Indie, with no card. When it ends you choose Indie or Pro, or octokan stops working: the chat on your site or app pauses until you upgrade. We email you the day before and when it ends. Nothing is deleted.
What is the founding offer?+
Until 30 November 2026, Indie is $15 a month and Pro is $50 a month, and that price is locked for as long as you stay subscribed. After that the price is $25 and $75. Yearly plans give you 3 months free: you pay for 9 months and use 12.
Does octokan use AI?+
Only if you turn it on, and there are two separate switches per app. AI insights (Settings > Data & privacy) let Analytics summarise your chats. AI Reply (Settings > Replies & languages) drafts replies and translates. Each sends redacted chat text (no emails, phone numbers or link parameters) to the AI provider, only when you use it. You always review a draft before it is sent.
Can my team answer too?+
Yes, on the Pro plan. In Settings > Team, add teammates by email. When they sign in with that address, your app appears in their dashboard and they can answer conversations. Only the owner changes settings and access. Telegram group chats work too.
Can octokan answer common questions for me?+
It drafts them. Paste your App Store link, Google Play link or website and octokan reads your listing, your site (including FAQ, pricing and help pages) and recent Google Play reviews. Matching questions show up in the inbox as a one-tap answer, and AI Reply drafts, if you turn them on, stay grounded in what it learned. You always send the reply yourself.
Does it translate chats?+
The chat UI is translated everywhere: the web chat and the iOS, Android, React Native and Flutter SDKs follow the device or browser language (14 languages), and the dashboard is available in 9. Translating the messages themselves needs AI Reply: translate a visitor's messages with one tap, and tick "Send in their language" to have your replies translated before they're sent.
Can I ask happy users for a review?+
Yes. Add your App Store, Google Play or website review link in Settings. When a visitor says thanks or you resolve their chat, the inbox offers one tap to send the right link for their platform.
What if I need more than 3,000 conversations a month?+
Contact us and we'll set up a plan that fits. Until then, new conversations pause at your plan's limit while existing conversations keep going, and the dashboard warns you as you approach it.
What can the AI do on each plan?+
AI Reply drafts and translation: 1,000 actions a month on Indie and 5,000 on Pro (100 during the trial). An AI insights run counts as 20. The limits are sized from the real cost of the small, fast model octokan uses, so AI stays included in your price.
